A variety of injuries occur to the joints of the hand in athletes ranging from skin abrasions to displaced intra-articular fractures. Common abrasions and contusions should not be quickly dismissed as trivial. Local swelling, ecchymosis, and tenderness may indicate a more serious injury to underlying structures. This article discusses serious injuries involving ligaments, volar plate, and bones at specific anatomic regions of the hand, including the carpometacarpal joint at the base of the fingers and thumb, the metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers and thumb, the proximal interphalangeal joints of the fingers, the interphalangeal joint of the thumb, and the distal interphalangeal joint of the fingers.
